For many young people, the transition from high school to what comes next is the most high-stakes, high-complexity decision of their lives. At Personal Finance Reimagined (PFR), we believe that a successful life isn’t built on facts alone, but on the decision systems you build. Our mission is to move families from information overload to decisional clarity, providing a repeatable system for a lifetime of great choices.

I recently sat down with Brittany Everett, the Post-Secondary Access and Success Specialist for both the Virginia Department of Education and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). Brittany’s work is dedicated to a concept she calls the "throughpoint"—the critical juncture between K-12 and post-secondary attainment.

Beyond the Door: The Power of the "Warm Handoff"

The traditional narrative often focuses on "access" or simply getting a student to the college door. However, Brittany’s extensive experience working in high-need spaces reveals that getting to the door is only half the battle. True success requires a "warm handoff".

Brittany highlights that first-generation students often face a double-risk of attrition compared to their legacy-generation peers. "I shouldn’t earn a degree to be less able to help my family get out of poverty than before I got that credential," she notes, emphasizing that students need the skills to navigate new environments with confidence.

Redefining "College Material"

One of the most powerful moments of our conversation centered on the language we use with students. We explore:

  • The "Now or Not Yet" Mindset: Everyone is "college material," but timing and pathways vary.

  • Early Exposure: Brittany shares the impact of the Middle School Campus Visit Project, helping students see themselves in these spaces years before they apply.

  • Inclusivity in Pathways: Whether it is a four-year university, an apprenticeship, or a technical certification, success must be defined by the student’s unique interests and lifestyle.

Why You Should Watch

Whether you are a parent helping a student navigate financial aid or an educator looking to bridge the achievement gap, this interview offers a roadmap for turning high-stakes transitions into high-return opportunities. From the Level Up Virginia initiatives to the importance of Summerbridge programs, Brittany provides the technical and emotional insights necessary to support students through their entire journey.

Join us as we explore how to build the bridges that ensure every student in the Commonwealth can walk through the door of their future with confidence.
